Freshman & Sophomores
Get to know your high school guidance counselor Plan a family college discussion Polish your study skills Evaluate your personality, interests and skills Explore careers of interest Obtain a Social Security Number (visit www.ssa.gov) Enroll in challenging courses Participate in extracurricular activities
Juniors
January-February
Identify characteristics you want in a college Attend college fairs and financial aid nights Explore College Answer’s FREE Scholarship search Register and study for the SAT and/or ACT March Narrow your college list to a reasonable number Schedule and attend campus visits Estimate how much each college will cost Discuss pay options with each college on your list
Seniors
January
Submit your FAFSA via the Web as soon after January as possible (some student aid programs award funds on a first-come basis) Complete and submit required financial aid forms. Meticuously follow all instructions and make copies of completed forms.
February-March
Review College acceptance and financial award letters as they arrive Watch the mail for your Student Aid Report (SAR) and carefully examine the results Track and follow all financial aid deadlines Respond quickly to college requests for additional documentation
